When people say that they're about to sally forth and brave the elements, which elements do they mean? Sulphur? A nasty patch of low-lying Vanadium?

I always figured they were talking about:
1) oxygen and hydrogen falling at terminal velocity or
2) large quantities of nitrogen, oxygen and trace amounts of others in gaseous form being driven from one place to another by a combination of pressure differentials and the coriolis effect.

But maybe that's just me...
