hirez: More graf. Same place as the other one. (Riiight)

I keep forgetting to write this down (more grist to the mill of my assertion, I fear) but it strikes me that far from being a 'base/mid-layer with full zip and pilling-resistant (Suuure...) TKA100 microfleece with excellent wicking properties, your average TNF|Tog20|Haglofs|MH fleece is the sartorial equivalent of a woolly cardie.

I think fleece have turned into the modern day equivalent of the woolly cardie. While initially they may have been technical garments, once they reach the point of being sold in the back of the Mail on Sunday magazine alongside hearing aids and stair lifts, 'warm and practical for hill walking/adventurous types' has long since been replaced by 'warm and practical for elderly dog walkers/shopping trips'.

Some of us are so old that we had fleeces back in the day when only Ramblers had fleeces, and we were thus the target of urban derision from the sort of chavvery that would now be wearing hoodies.

Of course in those days the chavs wore pure nylon, and were much easier to light.

(JHR - was it a mate of yours that achieved the fabled "release of headlock by lighting the shirt tails of one's oppressor" pyro-nage?)

The reminds me somewhat of a punky friend who had her hair split in a two tone style about 6 years ago, where the top layer was peroxide blonde and the under layer was dyed black. the local chavs would take the piss, "Did you run out of hair dye??", "When are you going to finish your hair?". How she scoffed to find it had become a chav style some years later.

It's the same as sportswear in general, there is "fashion" stuff and "technical" stuff, for people who need it. I need to buy some trainers the other day, I walked into the nearest sports store that there was not one pair in there for people to actually run (or do any sports) in, nor clothing. It can be annoying to see people posing instead of doing, but hey, if these people want to pay a premium for the fashion and that means I can pay a reasonable price for the technical stuff I need, so much the better.

There's that, too.

I was in the changing-room @ work, clambering into my cycling togs, when I was accosted by a chap who'd obviously spotted the Asics flat-feet-specials I was wearing and wondered if I'd like to join the $work running club.

I imagine he'd not have bothered had I been shod in Nike-Expensives.

I chose 'You bastard!' just because I liked it as a choice.

It strikes me the audience for your fiction may be the technical end of [livejournal.com profile] browncardy. If there is one.
