Edit: "I have a number of CDs that I do not listen to any more - I am selling them off at very reasonable prices, do have a look and see if any take your fancy"

Date: 2005-03-03 09:55 pm (UTC)Sadly, I already have all the ones I'd like... but how can you sell "Snuff Said"? I haven't got it to hand, but isn't that the one with the "Bran Flakes" advert on it?

Date: 2005-03-03 10:24 pm (UTC)I see I'm going to have to go through the list and explain bits of it.
The MSG was from a period when I was listening to, well, no bloody g*th rubbish at all. IIRC it was equal amounts Orbital, Catherine Wheel and Balanescu Quartet (and skronk techno and Underworld and... Oh bugger). Steve, who I shared a house with 93-94, really liked it. I thought the first track was ok, but the rest of the thing went downhill. Of course now that I listen to the thing for the first time in eleven years, it's with different ears. I might yet de-list it.
The Snog was a definite mistake. I have no real idea why people rate the bloke so much. It's the canonical INDUSTRAIL(tm) bus-station-nutter vox with a twiddly backing that's not quite good enough to be techno. I've MP3ed the Severed Heads remix; the rest can go.
Battery? I tried, really. My God but that young woman's got a voice powerful enough to slice concrete, but the rest of the production's so dry it's like chewing cardboard.
The rest of it falls squarely into 'one good track' or 'Haven't listened to it in 10 years, clearly don't give a bugger'

Date: 2005-03-03 11:59 pm (UTC)On the other, one had to develop a certain detachment, lest one finally snap after listening to one too many 'nearly good enough' CDs and go round the perpetrator's house to berate them in person.
The sense of being let down by a CD that's got a fine second half or a good couple of tracks is a terrible thing. I suspect it's hard work to measure up to something like 'Come visit the big bigot', 'Feed me wierd things' or 'Computerworld'. Must be awful in my record collection. Cheek by jowl with SPK white labels, Tackhead 12s and the surly mob of Big Black records.

Date: 2005-03-04 12:18 am (UTC)I mean, it must be hard to compete with All The Other Bands In The World, especially if you only have a few songs of greatness in you.
But on the third hand, that greatness oughtn't be thrown in the bin just because you can't don't have a standard dozen songs to make a standard industrial package. That's just too Taylorish for comfort.

Date: 2005-03-04 11:15 am (UTC)So, this 'Trade' business. Let's see if I've got it:
o Ensure you have things that no-one else has got.
o Tell moderate untruths about them.
It really is all terribly confusing.

Date: 2005-03-04 01:25 pm (UTC)Black Lung (what he did next) is much better than Snog. Paranoid dada-dustrial beat-mashing. Lovely.
The guy from MSG works in my local video shop...
Andrew.
