I think you should all go see Syaranosui, if you get the chance.

I'm still not sure what to make of it/them. Definite Peel material, though. Sturdily minimalist guitar, backing tracks that sound like machines breathing or buildings playing hide and seek, echoes of Go4 and PiL but obviously filtered through non-western chord sequences.

[Edit: I should also add that the Bis cover of Love will tear us apart is a thing of startling beauty. I know I'm completely out of touch, but when did they swap hairbands and fey guitars for SIDStations and a vocoder? If that's indicitative of the state of music @ Digi:tec, then I've been a silly old Hector...]

I'll be seeing them this Saturday at B Movie.

Now that the great Hirez has given them his seal of approval I am shit scared that they are supporting us....considering that we have been pretty shite live, of late....

'Great hirez'? Oh, come on... :p

In point of fact, it strikes me that it's the sort of bill that Uncle Nem would put together. It'll work well.

I have the Syaranosui demo here. A thing of beauty, like a futurist take on the halcyon days of 4AD. In the absence of floggable merch, would you like a copy?

4AD. Yes.

That was the description I was working towards last night.

I would. Ta.

(Wanders off, whistling '4AD3DCD' and 'Eighties' at the same time.)

Remind me of your address with a quick mail to lee@wasp-factory.com and it shall be yours. Massively looking forward to seeing them in Norwich & London over the weekend now...

Not only but also...

My mail contained the SonVer demo today - Ben & Jo from ELR's cello+electronics side-project.

Oh. My. God.

Another must-hear platter. Will add it to the burn-pile.

With any luck, he's sending me one anyway, since I bothered him about it over the weekend.

I'm about four months behind on Legends-work. If Uncle Marcus wasn't otherwise occupied in battling the demon weed, he'd have probably come round to give me a shoeing by now. Or just sent a stack of Etherial Bollocks(tm) for review.

the Bis cover of Love will tear us apart is a thing of startling beauty.

I'm sure I remember you saying a couple of years back that there could be no good cover of that song, so if you don't mind I'll file your comment under "high praise indeed". Perhaps i should try to find out what this "Bis" bunch sound like, then.

Oh, indeed. I think I said as much only last week.

Then the Nouvelle Vague CD turned up and changed things. I reserve the right to change my opinions based on fresh data.

I'm not sure if this is the same 'Bis' that Seething Wells used to gibber on about in the NME, mind.

the last bis album i picked up was all synths and electronics, and i thought it was technically very good, though none of the songs actually made me want to listen to it much. Sounds harsh but it didn't have the magic, but i'm keeping listening to it as it might grow in me.

I heard that Bis had a vote on their website on the direction they should go in and this new sound might be the result? I'm happy to stick you a fairly recent bis single in the post if you wanna listen to it, i think i've got one hanging about

What about Swans' versions?

I think those and the PY versions were the ones that started me off on the somewhat Stalinist (but that sort of thing was expected of teenage NME readers in the early 80s) path of considering all JD covers to be idealogically unsound.

I have a sort of a plan:

I'll download (for the purposes of rapid deletion, I have no doubt) all the versions of LWTUA I can find on Soulseek and give them some Juke Box Fury.

I suspect that my opinion would be confirmed if I broadened scope to include the myriad shitey US goffbands on various Cleopatra 'tribute' compilations, so for the sake of time and sanity I'll do my best to avoid those. Unless they're really bad.
