I think that was fun.

[ That 'how did we meet?' thing - I'm game. Largely because I'm usually introduced to people when incapacitated in one way or another. I'm going to turn into that bloke out of Gigi, I can tell. ]

(Obviously turning into a bloke out of Gigli would be a freight wuss'n deff. Yerse.)

Edit: Mad thing. Makes London sound much more interesting.

Swarf gig at the Camden Underworld. You were indeed incapacitated.

In the bar at ground level while waiting for the queue to disperse, surely? Or was that a later one?

WHS!

You were in the World's End, talking loudly about Steve Cassidy, and I interrupted, rudely, to your evident astonishment. It took me *hours* to associate the genial John Hawkes-Reed with the ununtterably aloof and permanently GotherThanThou hirez@cix.

Should probably add that at this point I'd know hirez@cix, purely through that medium, for about 12y...

... Even though it's always been jhawkes@cix... :p

(I'm right. There is someone else trading on my average good name. I get the bastard's hangovers for one thing.)

[G] I have that, too. I think I get entire football teams' sometimes.

However, a rigorous program of training has made them happily very rare these days. (Hangovers, that is. Not football teams, alas.)

My Cix 'persona' was the result of random combinations of speed, beer, acid and coffee, with the obvious personality-erosion that those stimulants enable.

It's odd, sometimes, to look at the (very limited) archives I have from then. It's 'me', I think, but a howling teenage self-destructive version with the attention-span and manners of a mink.

I met you in the... um... what is the Dev called when it is in Whitby? Um... the Elsinor. We'd both had one or two and I can't remember how we got chatting but we talked for ages about old computery things and just generally interesting stuff.

christ, i can't even remember what *year* we met. 96 probably. umm. highgateish? one of us was wearing a dress?

god, do you have a better idea than i do?

Date: 2004-08-08 03:30 pm (UTC)

Nope. Were you at that sodding festival at the Astoria that Rosetta headlined? Insolence or Imbroglio or IBS or something?

Date: 2004-08-09 12:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fross.livejournal.com
oh god yes! wow i remember that now. did we meet there?

christ, that's so long ago it's like someone else's memory.

(and it was probably me wearing a dress)

If that's the festival I think it is, I was there as well... but didn't know either of you at the time!

In the Dev briefly, in about... um... 2000? Next time I saw you was in Slimes, and you completely blanked me, and then we met again at a party, and it turns out you simply didn't recognise me with fewer clothes on. :-)

Date: 2004-08-08 03:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hirez.livejournal.com
Ha! Yes, I remember the Dev-thing. At least I think I do. -bat was threatening to set you on WD, yes?

And indeed the party as Niceboots towers ditto.

The slime-thing is/was just me trying to be a respectful-of-other's-space pro-feminist thinking bloke.[1] The less clothing, the more care I take to studiously Not Look. Unless of course I've been invited to admire a particular outfit or clothing item.

(And the sheer crush of people always sent me right into Tube-Mode.)

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

[1] Though now I come to write it down, it's kind of a bit pointless given the nature and point of dressing up. Gah!

I think we started speaking when we got into a conversation about Stockhausen on Pure. No idea when we actually met IRL, I expect it was at Whitby and both of us were too drunk to remember!

Oh yes, I remember now; both of us being quite relieved that the other wasn't quite as unapproachable and scary as they were in our heads! I still have the shirt somewhere :)

I can't for the life of me remember the first time we met. I am guessing it was circa 1999 or so? I "knew" you online from ukpg for some time prior to that. I seem to vaguely recall (though both of us would've been incapacitated) it was a Chaos Engine Christmas gig. Possibly one where you DJ'd? My memory for meeting people is bad.

Date: 2004-08-08 03:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hirez.livejournal.com
My memory of that night is a complete blur, other than playing Herbie Hancock at a roomload of blank faces.

See, that's why I've never been asked to DJ since. Apart from the event in Chicago where I spent the entire weekend projectile vomiting in a hotel room rather than playing records at horrified punters.

Yes. I'm sure there was a mob/conversation where it transpired that I was the only chap who'd not viewed ver Sevs. Indeed, one chap had put them on stage. (In Perth?)

1995 or was it 1996? In Chicago, IL toward the end of the year. Some bar (Neo?, Delilah's?, Aftermath?--though I think that was closed by then). It's all a blur but I bet we both had a Guinness in our hands at the time!

New Year's Eve, end of 2000.. party at [livejournal.com profile] naughtypixie and [livejournal.com profile] juliann's place, if I recall correctly. Which I may not, since it was NYE and all.

Then subsequently at Whitby the next year, and then at a Dream Disciples gig in Camden a little later on..

Possiblilities include :
-You picked up the spilled contents of my pencil case outside Hut10 and fashioned them into a umbrella.
- Taking a wrong turn in the D&P you enter the ladies room and scrounge mascara.
- I spilt my pint on you while "Rocking with Rita"
- Belgium
- Some Chaos-related thingie.

im still peeved that the pics steph took of me with nick cave never came out cos her camera was broken.[1]

why do i never get to meet famous people???[2]

*pout*

[1] only when i think about it, which is almost never. still not read king ink2!!! ;p
[2] ok, ive met a few, but not as many as i feel i should have, given my age and past-times.... [3][5]
[3] oh and that matthew kelly whot was off the telly used to get in my lift at the hospital but that doesnt count as i never spoke to him. [4]
[4]esp after the questionable child porn scandal which turned out to be slander! but that beard was always a bit... hmmm....
[5]ok so i once did some medicines for edward tudor pole but i never mentioned to him i knew who he was, cos i dont do that sort of thing[6]
[6]is that why i never meet famous people? cos im too polite to disturb them unless entirely necessary? [7]

Too much self-respect to go fawning over 'rock stars'?

The punk rock was about breaking down the barriers between 'us' and 'them' - Here's three chords, now form a band / 303 + 101 + 808 = Now form a band / Anyone can play guitar.

I try not to do it because I never know what to say to the little dears.

possibly.

and yes, ive never thought of anything intelligent to say to wayne hussey.

i complained to eldritch that they didnt play marian in london and he said theyd play it the second night, i complained to him in leeds that all the chippies were closed and he blamed the rugby in wales.

as for robert smith... god knows! im not in a position to tell him to get himself down the gym but he sure looks like he's headed for a heart attack unless he gets something done about his chunkiness soon... youth isnt on his side forever, sadly.....

i did fawn over AAE when i first met them, but now i can poke fun at them instead ;)
