CoE was mostly non-optional when I were a lad, and one went along with it because, well, everyone else was too.

(Even though there was a background noise of 'Wait a minute, this doesn't quite feel right..' Hm. Where have I heard that before?)

So there was the youth group and badges. And a week at a remote corner of the Lake District with a handful of other likely types, all shepherded by vicar + offspring + offspring's partners.

It's remarkable how something so not-sinister can be looked at with C21st eyes and rendered really rather suspect.

I still can't stand the 'Saturday night fever' soundtrack.
