I don't know where to begin with this.

It transpires that the Romans worshipped Cotswold gods. (Even now, El Bat is warming up his sarcasm cannon...)

I dunno that 'Apollo Cunomaglos' is a particularly Cotswold name, but then Tartaglia's produce the best ice cream in Gloucestershire and dissent will result in a shoeing, so, er, stitch that you Oxfordshire bastard.

What you've got there is your Romano-British pairing of a native god with a classical god - Apollo, assocaited with dogs, would be a good match for Cunomaglos - cuno meaning 'hound'. Such amalgamations of local and Roman gods were common throughout the western empire. Cf Sulis Minerva in Bath and Mars-Oculus at Caerwent.

Aha.

I must admit that I was off at a tangent immediately - 'Big Jez, god of fighting people from Evesham'

Please tell me more of this "Mars-Oculus", as it's only a pleasant wander up the road from here.

Every time I go near Caerwent, they tell me "Oh, the temple. Bit of a Mystery, that" and claim that no-one knows who or what was worshipped there.

Another Romano-British 'hybrid' god. Mars + possibly Ocelus, a possible Germanic warrior god. Alternatively, it could mean "Mars the philsopher" referring to Ocellus of Luciania.

From an alter stonet: DEO MARTI OCELO AEL AGVSTINVS OP VSLM
"For the god Martius Ocelus, Aelius Augustinus the Optio, willingly and deservedly fulfilled his vow."

It sounds about Up Pompeii to me. "CunoMAGlos, I said Maglos, missus, oo, titter ye not" etc.
