Lately I've been reading anything and everything by LJK Setright (except of course the best three engine books, that are all £200+ S/H) Not only was he doing for motoring geekery what Peelie did for music, he also wrote beautifully about how to explain it. The only other writer I know that comes close is J E Gordon with his two materials science books.
