Jayzus.

I mean, there are probably people out there who look at me like I'm some demi-god because I may (or may not) have piloted a SIIa Landie while the balance of my mind was disturbed (Three gear levers, no synchromesh on 1st & 2nd. Oh. And a Fairey OD. Four levers, and it was generally considered a Bad Idea to shift into OD in 1st and 2nd) because they're used to old-skool slushboxes or modern semi-autos.

Yer man in that there Kenworth? Respect due, as they used to write in the NME when it was relevant and interesting. (October 1982)

There's probably an amount of semi-overt gatekeeping in that post. See also complexity/convenience and the place of useful tools in a modern and inclusive society.

Yeah, that's pretty complex. Although, y'know, people get all impressed when they find out I drive a 6-speed manual, which isn't particularly exciting. Everyone drives automatics these days... :P

I've been reading about driving CVR(T)s lately-- they have pretty basic controls:

(From here. (http://www.livesteammodels.co.uk/dhmg/char-1.html))

They have different turning radii depending on which gear they're in, and apparently the original (military) drivers liked to fire up the engine, give it the gas, and shift straight into third from a standstill (they're only 8 or 10 tons, so why not?), so mostly when you find them used they have a totally fried transmission...

wheee. more complex than tractor/combine driving, but the shifts look nice and solid. nice to have a firm 'yes here' rather than the mushy transition zones nowadays. then again, could be my old noggin discarding the hard parts for the fun.
