I'm sure you're feeling jolly pleased with yourselves for discovering this exciting new thing where you can play Jolly Tricks on someone who's left a logged-in session open on one or other 'social networking' site. (nb: sarcasm)

However, calling it 'frape' or 'facebook rape' is, as I'm sure has been pointed out, a bit shit.

One thing is the result of carelessness, alcohol, not being aware of one's surroundings or trusting people who may or may not have your best interests at heart, but is pretty much your own damn fault. The other one, really really not.

The existing term is 'coat-tailing'. You horrible little bastards.

It was always called baggy-pantsing in my day.

"Raping" was what you did to old computers that you wanted to salvage components from.

Agreed. Short of a chastity belt, it's not like you can password-protect your vagina.

Perhaps I should post it to the other place, too. I didn't know if I was pointing out the screamingly bloody obvious or not.

Apparently not (it being obvious). I've seen "fraped" used all over the place.

I was going to ask if it would be really poor netiquette to link to this post in The Other Place. It ought to be screamingly bloody obvious, but all evidence indicates otherwise.

Please do go ahead. Share and, er, enjoy, as it were.

Yes, but you ought to do it from the account of some unsuspecting rube.

I blame Julian Dibbell for trivialising the term 'rape' (as 'cyberrape') in his 1993 article in the Village Voice.

The young person in my part-time care got quite a harsh lecture when he declared that he was "off to rape the internet" Ditto a friend who claimed to have been raped by a phone provider when he actually meant he'd ben offered a less than fabulous deal.
I've gone through a cycle of being rantingly angry about this term on FB, but took the passive line of removing the ignorant shite in question.

So in short, thank you for this, now I don't have to.

Yes, young friends of mine in the metal scene here get quite the lashing if they use 'rape' or 'gay' for anything else than what they are, and continued use afterwards gets a plonking.

Let's do the other part of this while we're at it.

Status update: "Hey everyone, I'm gay!"

Because that's witty and couldn't possibly cause any trouble or trivialise sexuality by implying that being gay is a bad thing.

Good job there's no archive of Usenet posts where certain denziens took pride in being called "net Nazis", 'cos that would be awful if the Holocaust were trivialised.

Er...

My excuse is I once actually compared someone to Chamberlain while talking to Mike Godwin. About a German.
