You know what's odd? I started this LJ business mostly with the intention of trying to remember bits of the past, then writing them down so I'd have a record other than 'Had a couple of scoops, talked some shite, middling hangover.'

So now it transpires that I have no recollection at all of medium-sized patches of the nineties. I mean, I can remember OS versions and nameservers of kit from fifteen years ago (194.207.0.1, FreeBSD 2.x) but do I recall staying at a chum's house for a weekend and meeting someone else's mad ex? Nope.

It happens a lot. I guess it's just me being me, and being happy or not happy about is largely pointless, but still. Then there's the state of mind where it feels like I'm just a passenger in someone else's head.

Anyway.

F-ing Windows, f-ing BT Internet, f-ing shite MFP drivers assuming f-ing Outhouse as a mailer.

On the other hand, the alternatives are worse. Computers are just shite. Or rather, they're fine for the sort of tiresome spod who can recall IP addresses faster than people's (ex) partners, but NBG for mum & dad. Today was actually embarrassing.

An attempt at witty humour aside and straight to the point- go and sniff stuff.
Smell is the single most sense that brings back memories. X

So science says, but not for me - my sense of smell is deficient and I was raised in a largely smell-free environment (my mother thinks there is no such thing as a nice smell). So what smell does for other people, music does for me.

I dread to think what sort of stuff the young JH-R was sniffing. Much of it came out of a cow, he was going on about the smell of blue fertiliser sacks the other day.

Oh, I totally get that.

For medium-sized patches of the nineties, there's always the Usenet archives.
