If you don't like this can your publishers not request this gets pulled? (I'll be buying my copy btw)

Since I signed up for electronic editions, and am generally in favour of giving stuff away, it would be well out of order (geezah) for me to get a monk on about it.

Is it a dodgy copy then? I thought it was a legit preview -- it just happens that it includes all of your story. It stops a couple of pages later.

As far as I'm aware, it's as legit as everything else on Googlebooks.

Heh... the knowledge wants to be free!

[To my mind, it's probably pretty good for you that your story is one of the ones that everyone can see -- widens the audience -- you don't see Cory Doctrow starving after all.]

Exactly so.

If I've a position on this sort of thing it's that I make the decision to give stuff away or not, and it's not really up to some 'copyfighter' elsewhere to bang on about 'fair use' after the event.

I don't think you *do* make the decision you know. I mean there are laws on these things -- admittedly unclear and bewildering laws but nonetheless laws. I've done the "copy a book chapter and distribute to students" thing and done so because I believe I can claim fair use. Even if the author was a complete git who hated education and students (and who can blame them) I have a legal defence I think (no expert mind you).

In fact yours seems to be the only story included in full (the other story, bizarrely, has a single page missing). Falls completely within US fair use laws as I understand them to copy a single chapter or a single short story from a book.

Good to get a chance to read that story again. :-)

Yes. It's quite different from the version that was on LJ.

Excellent. It's a brilliant bit of work -- I really love it. Then, as you know, I have a thing for transport and for networks.

Excellent. Now I have to decide on deforesting the amazon e-version for my reader.

How's the writing going? Any new subs.. say that airship piece?

Oddly enough, it went out to Andromeda Spaceways yesterday. Given the vagaries of the international date-line, I expect there'll be rejectomancy over the weekend.

Great! I'm waiting for a couple markets to open and Analog to get back to me with my response sometime in the next 10-20 days. Fun innt?
