Buying music on MP3 (from Amazon. Appears unencumbered) feels as much of a real transaction as buying things with plastic did.

Not yet.

It would be instructive to discover how much money the various services hoofed back to the artists.

(Ans: It probably works like MCPS which means that the income from a Fall record is evenly distributed between Elton John, Cliff and the Spicers.)

Some of our stuff is destined for Amazon shortly so I'll let you know. I can chat about the demographics for the other download sites, next time you're round. It pretty much varies.

Yes, except they have some particularly horrid geomagraphic IP search that won't let you download stuff without using a UK proxy server. Which is a royal pain and even iTMS doesn't do that.

But at least you're not buying something packaged in materials that you'll throw away and/or cannot recycle, or that uses fuel and manpower to deliver to you via truck!

You meant Amazon has an app that simulates a bloke who'll sneer at your choice, or tell you how he's seen them live, and they were shite?

I believe you'll want www.driftin.co.uk for that.

(If I ever write a Parallel Cheltenham story, the black carrier-bags will have a URL on them. Two other people's heads will be slightly warped by this.)

No, what I mean is that until one has connected the 'wave plastic at toys, toys come home with one' moment to the 'oh fuck i didn't want to eat this month anyway' one on receipt of the CC bill, plastic-based transactions are not 'real'. (The people who end up in debtor's prison television have yet to work this one out.)

Similarly buying music as MP3 is not yet a 'real' transaction in my head.
