  • I can't tell the difference between a vial of deuterium heavy water and a vial of water.

  • ... And I really want a Geiger counter.

  • The museum of victorian science is seriously worth a visit.

  • Should have bought the DJ Scandy album as well.

  • [livejournal.com profile] boglin == The combat Strawberry Switchblade.

  • Vast steak w/fish sauce. Shouldn't have worked. Did. OMFNom. (Moon + Sixpence)

Hold on, hold on, at room temp surely deuterium is gas and water is liquid!

Do you mean "heavy water" -- apparently the weight difference isn't that much (hold on -- um... 1/10th extra approx I guess if I remember my periodic table right).

Dammit. Beat me to it.

Yes, I do. I should probably drink less. Or more. Or something else.

Why have I never heard of the Museum of Victorian Science before now ? Dammit. Sounds definitely worth a visit.

Because the chap's publicity needs a wedge of Google/b0ing^2.

It utterly is.

Maximum capacity six persons. Nice pub within walking distance. Indeed, one was encouraged to use the pub car-park.

hmmm, I have a couple of geiger counters, lost one of them though.

I've had that offer before, but escaped with only minor injuries.

Moon & Sixpence is lovely, though don't shout about it or it'll be spoilt by invading goffiks.

Not only that, a gieger counter would be useless with deuterium or heavy water. It doesn't detect them, you need a scintillation counter.

Hmmm, I really need a mad scientist icon...

Yes, but it would cheerfully spot the Pitchblende and Americium the chap was waving about.

Because it decays by emission of a neutron rather than alpha, beta or gamma?

Duh! Did I say scintillation counter, I meant to say mass spectrometer. I stayed up too late making sure those Americans did the right thing.

Deuterium doesn't decay, it's stable, I was getting it confuddled with Tritium. Need coffee!!!

It's stable but it does decay (slowly) to ordinary hydrogen.

Heavy water is not entirely good for you, the main effect in small quantities being to drop the blood pressure.
