Happy Toys!
Mar. 6th, 2003 01:45 pmDelivered by a splendid uniformed fellow this very AM:
Two copies of the Skinflowers Also Brave EP. (They're blister-packed so you have to destroy the packaging to play the bastard thing. So properly anal Collectors have to buy two. Not that I'm a Properly Anal Collector. I may just fall to assassination in order to secure the value of my investment, mind...)
[Some careful knifework later]
Ha! (Well, ok, it's still a bit destroyed. Curse that second, hidden, layer of clear plastic)
What does it sound like? Dunno, yet. I'm still listening to the Punk Elvis EP. That sounds like... Skinflowers. There's some Bob Mould in there too. And Nova Mob. A small amount of Nilon Bombers, also. (From the demo tape, before they were horribly broken by the recording industry. It was a party in Lansdown Place...)[1]
[ Ah. Here we go. ]
Absolutely damn fine stuff. Uplifting, but pokes a different set of neurons to (differently) uplifting techno.
[1] No bugger's going to get that.

Date: 2003-03-06 08:30 am (UTC)This is getting as previous as discovering Chaos was at the same Neff gig @ Chelty town hall.
Ok... Who went to the Buzzcocks/Fabulous gig at (bugger. Coleford?)
Or the Vindaloo Summer Special? (Ted Chippington, Fuzzbox, Nightingales)
Or New Order in Malvern?

I DJ`d the chillout room at the NYE party at the guildhall one year, but for the life of me have no memory of who played. It *may* have been BBM then as well. That`d be a good one to find out people I`ve met since were at. I DJ`d quite a few times at the guildhall actually.

Date: 2003-03-06 09:47 am (UTC)I didn't (shamefully) hit the Guildhall anything like as often as I should, given that every time I did go was a top night out. (on the other hand, if I'd gone more often, maybe the wonderfulness would have palled.) There was also the bugger of having to drive back to middle-of-bloody-nowhere since I didn't know anyone within foot-distance of the place.
I regularly think that a small scene (like the Cheltenham/Gloucester one sometimes managed to be) makes for a more interesting time, because you're more likely to go along and view random folk (3Mustaphas3 @ the Victory club), jazz (Chum Bob's band @ Guiting Power), scratchy indie (many bands that I've forgotten) or nights of banging techno (Axiom), because it's that or the telly or some grotty old-man pub. Somewhere larger, it would have been too easy to pick a genre and then fall into a rut.
I think.
