The set of Guardian readers that care about such things will more than likely have crawled across this site in their woolly-jumpered droves, but this bit was the one that stopped me dead in my tracks and made me go for a wander and think about other things for a while. Resonant? Ho fuck yes. More resonant than the Tacoma Narrows bridge. (positions reversed, mind)

And just what would you know about the Tacoma Narrows bridge, mind you? That's over here in my neck of the woods!

Well, it's kind-of world famous - not the current one, but the 1950's one that didn't quite make it.

[ What Mel said ]

The footage of the previous version was regularly shown to spotty oiks 'studying' O-Level physics as an example of what can happen when you hit something's resonant frequency. Usually followed round our way with talk of how the Severn Bridge was much better because it was designed in a wind-tunnel by Solid British Engineering Fellows. (who likely pointed thoughtfully at scale models of same with their pipes.)

Ah yes, forgot about that one. My mind (and taxes) are focused on the current Tacoma Narrows Bridge because it is not satisfying all the transportation needs so they are building a second bridge right next to it. When finished, each bridge will host traffic going in one direction only. (I think the area there is just plagued. When Mt. Rainier blows up, which is due just about any time, the whole problem will be settled.)
