You know them quiz/survey things that ask you personal stuff?

Want to know where the data goes?

Ok, so that's only mildly embarrassing. This one's slightly more serious:

I have recently learnt the Scots phrase "Git it rite up ye!", which I believe is appropriate for this sort of situation. Arf!

I am waiting for the LJ to descend into a huge porridgey fustercluck.[1]

is it unsuprising that one of the most common memes (pornstar name) asks for the mothers maiden name, which is unerversally used by banks for checking.

i've always kind of thought these memes are largely for information gathering purposes, like a lot of things out there. Information is after all power and power is money.

The strange thing is that I remember that one going around when I was at school - back before such things as "security questions" were particularly thought of.

Then again, at least one friend just uses a word of their choice in place of the real "mother's maiden name" - after all, they don't actually want to know that, they just want to have a secondary check that the person can remember ...

I have a number of mother's maiden names, dates and places of birth, and pets just for these purposes.

Well, I know a few Yorks and a Salisbury or two, it's not like place names for surnames are uncommon.

Information is power? Even if it's trivia? I dread to think of the unspeakable powers the people that hold all the data for 'What Star Trek/Lord of the Rings/Eastenders character am I?' are.

Maybe banks should start using _that_ as the personal, intimate, unknowable security question. A whole level of Jedi-slash-fanfic-based user authentication.

Welcome to Bastard Bank

Which Hogwarts house are you in? Gryffindor

What colour is your light sabre? Red

Which Trek officer did you serve under? Worf on which ship? USS Otaku and which species of aliens did you have sex with? Tribbles

Also interesting is that social networking allows people to pass on personal details about other people as part of phishing like this.

Awesome.

Like the secret crush meme. That came and went three times of asking for information and selling it back to people before they gave up.
