Although obviously not, since this isn't a private entry. So this is what, transparent grandstanding? If so, where's Frank Bough? Invisible, obv.

(Strange how one picks up some people's modes of speech/writing and not others. Infectious brains?)

Hahahaha! Have I infected you with "obv"?

I fear so.

On the other hand, I note people using phrases like 'A right shoeing' (Which I picked up from a particularly scary Gloucester Casual in 1983) or 'mildly concerning' (Denoting that pit-of-stomach-in-lift feeling when you see error messages from a particularly important computer) so I guess it all evens out.

After all, William Burroughs is a virus from outer space.

Paul is fond of 'a good shoeing' but I think he got that from his dad...

[FX: Thinks about making obvious comment. Doesn't.]

Parallel evolution wouldn't surprise me. I'd never come across the phrase before then because the people I knew who'd give some(one|thing) a kicking would be wearing boots. Even now, the mental image involves expensive loafers and white socks.

"Mildly concerning" is quite Civil Service-y, actually. Along with "somewhat disappointed", "I am not fully comfortable with the proposals as currently drafted" and "X is unlikely to be content with this approach".

A few years ago I caught "she looks well rough" and "that's well dodgy". Even though I grew up (and indeed still live) in south london, those passed me by until I hit my 30s. I love the colourful local argot - "I wouldn't touch 'er wiv yours, mate", "you startin'? Yeah? You startin'? You wanna bang in the maaahf?", "faaahk off you KUUUN'!".

I think there are a set of professions drawn to phrases where you may express 'oh shit we're all going to die!' in a non-management-startling manner.

There's also the influence of 'Yes, Minister'.

And Polari, hackish...

... Language is fun to play with.

I do like palare (an alternate spelling). "You should hear him, Mr 'orne. He's a master at the cottage upright".

Clueless gave me some bad linguistic habits. Like, DUH! Like, HELLO! What-EVERRR! And of course the things I caught from various gay friends - the state of 'er, woss she like?

Words are lovely things. Hurrah for vernacular!

Why weren't we at the CCC, eh ? That was silly. Bah.

Berlin. Winter. Same reason as last time.

On the other hand, it should be the year for a CCC-Camp so we'd better go to that instead. (In the 'go early to be bossed around by English Pete and stay late to help Rop with the bins' manner.)

Hm. There's a post brewing that would involve listing the things I want to do this year, but I'm loath to do something like that for fear of getting to December and going 'Bugger!'

On the other hand, it would Do Me Good to set some goals like that. Maybe.

You're right, we had.

Goals are good. A chap should have something to strive for. And if you get to December and haven't done them, you'll know to try harder next year. Or pick easier goals.

Not that I think I could draw up any kind of coherent list, mind. Maybe I'll steal yours.

Although I'm probably better off just scribing them down in a handy Moleskine somewhere.
