In conversation recently, there was incredulity when I mentioned going to the Blackpool Experimental Whitby Weekend.

It did happen, didn't it? Rosetta/Inkubus/Oh God I've forgotten they were rather good, too.

It's possible. There are bits that I remember that are far too cliche to be true. The B&B bloke from Smethwick, and indeed the inside of the B&B. The entire tower and ballroom experience.

On the other hand...

AKA Morecombe Goth Fest?

I'll get me (long, black, sinister) coat

No, this was Whitby Jo's experiment to see if WGW could be held somewhere with a larger venue/more B&B/hotels.

Narrowly avoiding inciting an East-coast / West-coast feud in a hip-hop styleee.

BTW - Saturday?

Possibly. Might just need to cole-haps in a coroner and have a weekend of writing.

The summer holiday thing? Yep. I can remember the announcements, although I didn't actually go.

The thought of a Blackpool Goffick Incursion gives me the fear.

ISTR standing outside a pub, in Blackpool, on a saturday night with a pink mohawk wearing some sort of dress shouting "I'm covered in Bees" every time I saw anyone wearing a shell suit.

The B&B had an ISDN line and by the end of the weekend I *really* wanted a salad.

(The tiger print seat covers are still in full effect in the Landrover)

Salad. Yes.

That was the weekend of the Red Bull experiment. (How many do you have to slurp if you want to be veryawakeformostofthenightandenduphelpingaverydrunk St. Karl home? Ans: less than I thought.)

The pub. I recall looking at the place from across the road as someone 'tested' the smoke machine. The stuff was pouring from the aircon vents as if it were liquid oxygen boiling off from the launch of the world's first Interplanetary Suburban Boozer. A live re-enactment of a fine Goons programme, if you will.

You didn't dream it.

DejaGoogle (http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.people.gothic/msg/df7f222ce27551b7)

5th-6th June 1998.

And not Rosetta Stone but Children On Stun instead (who sounded a lot like Rosetta circa An Eye For The Main Chance, if one may describe a band as sounding "like" goth-era Rosetta without multiple levels of Mission/Sisters-impersonation irony, although to be fair they were produced by former Rosetta rhythm guitarist Porl Young).

I must admit, at first sight of your post I assumed, like Sarah Mum, you'd got confused with Morecombe.

Oh memories Maud Grimes from Coronation Street saying, "That Fred Elliot, he's got An Eye For The Main Chance" and some mild amusement on uk.people.gothic

'Tis the march of time. Sparked memories of a less successful promoter - Brian Elliot Foe.

Wouldn't mind going back in time to the days of Epitaph/Dissolution. Wonder what Ian and Cath are up to these days.

They certainly don't make times like those any more.

I remember "Fuck-off Brian"!

I saw Ian and Cath at Whitby in April. Unfortunately, I didn't have much of a chance for a natter or I could tell you more.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away - PKD

Do you believe it happened?

From: [identity profile] hirez.livejournal.com
No, I know it happened. Just like I know I/we went to the 'fields regularly and drank nasty beer in the company of people like Lee, Slime, Rich D and Martyn before going up the Shite Owl for nasty lager and a bit of going deaf.

However, no-one else I know from Cheltenham now has any recollection of that sort of thing. It's like my version of Cheltenham (and in this case, the not-Whitby Gothic Malarkey) has been edited out of the collective memory.

It makes a chap wonder, reasonably regularly.

Is/Was Slime long-haired-Dave who moved to Tewkesbury? I think of these people regularly, albeit fleetingly. I consider myself someone of reasonable intelligence but I still have difficulty grasping the fact that the lives of everyone I knew then (15-20 years ago) have moved on. In my mind, everyone is still playing DLT's Give Us A Break trivia machine out back of The 'Fields. I suspect several of them are now dead.

No, Dave was, um, Dave.

Slime was that short chap with the no.1 cut and the odd twitch.

Name is deffo familiar but no mental image is forming. "Odd twitch" definitely does not narrow down the... er... 'Fields field.

Will be back in blighty at Chrimbo. Will probably have a few nostalgia beers. I went down the Bass House last time I was back.
