If I'd any sense, I'd have crufted up an attache case with puppet-shaped cutouts. However, I don't. (Because if I did, I'd not have thought of glove puppets as duelling weapons.)
I'm not sure about the overkill... while I think Sooty is probably a main weapon, Sweep seems more of an off-hand weapon, like a main-gauche, net or cloak.
I like the idea of men in flouncy shirts, meeting as the cold light of dawn slowly burns off the tendrils of mist; their seconds opening the weapons case to present them with a choice of hand puppets.
Sir is in full possession of correctness in regard to the facts of the matter.
(Although either Dave Allen or Spike Milligan would have done equal justice to the scene. Allen would have had far more of an air of buckled swash about him, Milligan and cohorts would have advanced toward the camera going "What are we going to do now? What are we going to do now?".)
