If you lived in the sort of house where they kept shotguns and green wellies, your parents had this poem on a teatowel. (Bottom half of the page) Good and obvious advice that's clearly never troubled the alleged ruling elite in Septic-land.

This story sums it up well for me. (Useless bunch of bastards not fit to run a sweetshop and play with cap-guns, in short)

all the kids i knew in Canada who hunted knew that poem. and i think they taught them in in Scouts, too.

however my mum, riding a white horse while wearing a reflective orange vest and singing "I am h-a-p-p-y" was shot at by moose hunters in Ontario, nonetheless. they said "I thought you were a moose".

They fucked up the fourth line of the poem.

It strikes me as odd - surely if you're going to shoot an American lawyer then you'd better take care to finish the job properly!

I was reflecting on this a couple of weeks back, on a paintball shoot. Lots of inexperienced people carrying CO2 guns with hair triggers, capable of quite some damage at short range. Between games people would walk around with fingers forgetfully on triggers, barrels pointing every which way.

Didn't hear the Advice once, it must be out of fashion.

I don't know if you saw the bit where they quote a few lines from blogs about current story - one of them said "Guns don't kill people - Vice-Presidents kill people." Cruel, but I laughed.

Yes, I did.

Far too many of them going 'So what?', which I don't believe I found terribly surprising. Especially poor was the attitude of the host: "Oh, people get peppered all the time." Jayzus.

I watched "bowling for columbine" last night.

I remember the bit where some pillock decided to put his rifle on his gun dog, because "it looked funny". The rifle slipped and shot him.

The local police officer said, in all seriousness, "We do not intend to prosecute the dog". He should have said "we're pulling the owner's gun certificate and prosecuting HIM for gross stupidity".

Didn't need the poem, simply had it drummed into me by fatherly repeatition.

Common sense - an uncommonly rare commodity

A similar version of that poem was posted in my grandparents house on the door to the gun cabinet.
