(I have lived in sad ignorance of Humppa music thus far. If you're in the same pitiful boat, I suggest you hie thee to http://sunsite.dk/~mk/wth-radio-humppa.mp3 and listen along. The first cover is pretty obviously 'Ace of spades', the second could either be 'John Wayne is big leggy' or 'Jesus built my hotrod'.)

Anyway.

So, these hackers, right? Pasty-faced malodourous individuals with a monitor tan, blue anoraks and the personality of a typewriter, yes?

No.

"An OpenBSD developer is an organic system that can transfer beer into code. Especially Henning."

At some point over the weekend I bought a high-visibility jacket with an OpenBSD logo on the back. I was drunk.

Some other things went on. Kevin Warwick was soundly heckled (not by me. I was doing... Something else.) and hand to be rushed away from the site in a black Saab before an angry mob could subject him to a cybernetic implant of their own devising. I learned that Bluetooth is startlingly insecure and I want a Mysteron box in order to terrify BMW drivers. If it wasn't pissing it down from the sort of cloud systems usually seen in 'When tornados attack' (I blame Joe Meek) it was stupefyingly hot. I survived both, though one pair of combats are now shorts. There were one too many MFTL presentations, though they would sort-of solve the problems they were pointed at. A bit.

(I'm not doing this very well.)

Weather satellites appear to make the very odd noise usually associated with the Villainous Tech in Bond films. We're probably not going to run out of oil, it'll just get really expensive. I had the devil's own job with airport security and passport control. It was either the damp passport or the 'Whatthehack' tag that I'd not cut off.

(If you're listening along, those were covers of 'We will rock you' and 'Paranoid'. Intermingled with drunken ranting about why Cups and Samba are shite. And how to hunt down furries.)

I return to 'reality' with the sense that I should be doing a lot more of this sort of thing.

Both Van Halen and Johnny Violent can look rightly upset that neither of them can now be considered to have done the definitive version of Jump!

Did you buy some whistles and a pair of white gloves to go with it?

The only way to properly heckle Kevin Warwick is with a substantial dose of EMP.

Yep, there's a lot of oil that it's currently uneconomical to get at, or we don't have the technology yet. But watch out for our cousins from the inscrutable east, as they're looking to go ice methane mining. Boom.

Captain Cyborg can go on all he likes about downloading our brains, but I reckon if he downloaded his ego it would clog up most of the worlds computer systems.

My word. Now I know.

And to think, we could have gone to the Humppa Marathon Party if only we'd known in time.

It's one of those 'road to the off-licence' moments where you understand the bloody obvious thing that you've been telling everyone else, but not taking the final step: We should have been paying more attention to the Wiki.

See all those people in their tents using Amstel crates for chairs and peering intently into their laptops? At least half of them were organising their social lives in exactly the manner I claim to do, but clearly didn't this time.

That's what Social Networking's about. Not this US-centric Orkut/Friendster six-degrees-of-JWZ-fandom malarkey that feels like some kind of First Tuesday personal branding exercise.

I think the second tune is a cover of Live is Life. I have no idea who did the original, nor have I any idea how I know this as I think the original is German.

The original of 'Live is life' was perpetrated by some mob named 'Opus'. Covered by Laibach in the ironic style that became tediously popular with every shite INDUSTRAIL(tm) band that existed.

However, the humppa track after 'Ace of spades' is 'Jesus built my hotrod'.

I had the dubious of pleasure of having Captain Cyborg as a supervisor for a while at Reading uni. The students used to play the amusing game of "Warwick spotting", i.e. which media stream had he managed to grease his way onto in the last few hours. The ex grew used to my tortured screams from the shower: "Is he on the radio again?"

A moment that I still hold dear is his appearance on Start The Week, where Paxman said to his face that he couldn't decide whether he was a buffoon or a self-aggrandising tw@. I may be paraphrasing slightly. But only slightly.

I agree. Well, at least some of them were. By means more open and diverse than the 'pack all your friends into this one server' solutions.

But I bet 80% of the screen time was spent in random Webbery when they'd lost track of their mates and didn't want to go out in the rain to go to a session. The laptop isn't just a way to find your friends, it's a way to be at home where it's all safe & comfortable.
