I blame [livejournal.com profile] lastaii.

... But before all that: Decca Navigator fan-sites.

Anyway. A while ago I went here to look for signs of this. Today we went mob-handed in the footsteps of [livejournal.com profile] lastaii and found the other end. Result! (Even if it was a scary looking edifice that loomed over one in a disturbing manner.)

There are a lot more photographs, but they're in two different cameras and will want sending off to the far away chemist. Though I think I'm inspired to play at darkrooms sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, the Berkeley Arms in Purton is an establishment I wish to visit properly. It features in CAMRA guides, so beards and tankards front and centre!

So. Public information films. It turns out there are two versions of 'Apaches' and the version you saw as an impressionable youth determines if you'm a country bod or a town-type.

That makes me new-school; took a week of hyperbolic hackery before I could integrate enough of a Loran signal to give a result that was within 20 km of where I really am.

:o)

It's a marvelous place. While we were looking at the remains of the bridge we got accosted by an elderly gentleman who went on at length about the disaster. Apparently the combination of fuel and gas caused the Severn to burn for a mile in each direction and the screams of the crews still haunted him to this day...

Can't wait for the rest of the photos!

How wierd; [livejournal.com profile] nientejg and I discovered the Sharpness side of that some time ago; but didn't have a clue about any of the history of it... Just decided that it looked cool.
Thank you for clearing up one of those odd little niggly-in-the-back-of-the-mind annoyances :)

Forgive my stupendous ignorance, but what is a broken nav ?.

It's what happens when you work your navvies too hard, O anonymous (but Tiscali-DSL-based) person.

Though in this case it means the site in question is somewhat counter-intuitive in the web-wandering department, thus navigating around it becomes a chore.

Thanks very much, I designed the site and very much appreciate your comments.

Ah. Oops.

I can't speak for [livejournal.com profile] quercus, but it seemed to me that if you came into the site directly from the posted link, it's not immediately obvious that there are (for instance) other pictures of the Sharpness-Lydney bridge. I found them via the means of poking about in a hopeful manner, and if one comes in 'through the front door' (as it were), then it is all obvious.

I'd like to say thanks for putting that site up anyway. The last time I looked around for information about that bridge, there was precious little. Which I guess was why I wanted to go out and look for it now. (And indeed the ferry at Aust. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/hirez/27079.html))
