Oh god. The Fatbit allowed as how i had wandered some 9k6 steps this evening, so I have just wandered out into the teeth of a gale in order for the thing to buzz cheerfully upon my wrist.

There's no hope for me, is there?

(Am I also the only person in the world to use resistor-style multipliers?)

The month of no tourists in Bath has come to an end. The place is now once again mobbed with crocodiles of French teenagers, and it is again impossible to get from A to B with any sort of hurry. Apparently stonewash jeans and yellow Docs are 'on' 'point'. So that's an entire nation's youth dedicating themselves to LARPing 1989. Quality.

Couldn't you just stay in and have a vigorous wank? Can it tell that from steps?

Only if he can do it with his toes, like some pervy orang-utan

Wait, you wear the fitbit on your toes -- I thought you were meant to wear it on your wrist?

I imagine doing that with your toes might be better exercise than walking.

There's going to be special fitness pr0n for that sort of thing. And presumably a 'sub' 'reddit' where people can swap disturbing PB stories.

It is alleged that they're NBG for cyclists unless worn on the ankle.

... and that, your honour, is the case for the defence.

Well from the fitbit point of view (sitting on your wrist) cycling very fast is indistinguishable from sitting down and not quite as much exercise as sitting down and sipping from a nice cup of tea (if you use the wrist with the fitbit on to lift the tea).

As a fitbit wearing cyclist (on wrist, it doesn't close around my ankle): after the last update it stopped counting quite so many steps for my bumpy commute to and from work. I used to be close to 5k just from biking, it's half that now. The web interface also now reports when it has decided that I did an "outdoor bike ride". o.O

Guess they've improved since the first generation of movement tracker devices -- actually turning a motion trace into a best guess activity is a standard task in machine learning classes these days -- because you can get a lot of data and some good ground truth that the company has.

I'm now wondering if it can also report "indoor bike right" from the number of times you bump into the coffee table? (David Coulthard used to say that driving an F1 car round monaco was like riding a bike around your living room.)

My fitbit can be told "I'm cycling now" and use the gps to work out where I've been in that time to calculate numbers for exercise. Doesn't help the step count since they're not steps.

(and no, you're not the only person to use things like 9k6 ;)

Wandering into the teeth of a gale: once.

I've since avoided the need in an even nerdier way: because I know roughly how many steps it takes to walk to the bus stop, etc, if I'm steps-deficient when I leave work I get off the bus early. There was the day I managed to be so sedentary I had to walk all the way from Lawrence Hill to get to my 10K. Since then I'm much better about remembering to get up and move during the day.

I'm sure with a sufficiently large house, running an indoor criterium would be a lot more fun than sweating away on the rollers like everyone else.

(The latest shiny thing to hook to yr turbo-trainer is a 'virtual tour stage' where you can 'race' against your 'friends' w/o leaving the conservatory. I look forward to the Credulous Rift version that comes complete with a virtual piss-bottling as you struggle up Ventoux.)

I have a loop around Bath that expands (or not) depending on weather and/or gumption. It'd be a bit grim if I was stuck in some industrial estate at the arse end of nowhere.

The latter would be the reason I very rarely manage the walk all the way to/from work - unless I go via Old Market (adding distance & time, not an option in the morning), there's a massive industrial estate which is incredibly pedestrian unfriendly, especially in the dark, for the last (or first) mile.
