The proximity of a post-Opening-Ceremony tweet from the estimable Ms chiller and reading of this fine book in the Guardian made it mostly obvious that the best reason most right-wingers and all authoritarians have for hating and fearing psychedelics is that they're the cure for their branch of madness, and if there were any sort of herd immunity to the hate-fuelled rubbish they peddle their memetic power base would expire quick-smart.

See also the splendidly bonkers rant in the Fail (to which I will not link) in re. how dare a bunch of fifth columnists use the NHS for propaganda purposes, etc.

In fact I believe the entire opening-ceremony was a £27m troll and hurrah for that.

Here in the U.S. the NBC coverage of it was horrible. There were many parts where we were left wondering just what the heck was going on. It was interesting, though. I liked the forging of the rings. The big creepy baby will haunt me for a bit (you can't unsee it, kind of like the creepy baby in Trainspotting).

A thing that struck me was someone twittering 'But why are those people such a big thing about their health service, surely all civilised countries have one?' (or at least similar sentiment if that's > sizeof(char[140]);)

Well, yes. I suspect the point is/was we're about to be joining the single uncivilised country w/o socialised healthcare and the Olympic thing was a memorial.

I note that while everyone was distracted the Government snuck through some new legislation meaning that their new 'academies' and 'free schools' don't have to employ actual teachers as teachers.
