This evening we have no water.

It transpires that earlier in the day, some bloke turned up two doors down to mend the bog. He turned off all the stop-cocks he could find, did, er, something and beetled off again.

The people directly next door turned their water on again and all was well.

Our outside stop-cock is shared with the house-with-the-bog.

Since no-one knows plumber-boy or how he left the bog, I turned the water back on for long enough to fill buckets and water bottles. If I've heard nothing from Bristol Water, who are also on the case, by tomorrow morning, I'm turning it all back on again so I can have a shower.

All good fun, eh?

(I mean, he probably finished the job and is just an idiot, but I'd rather not flood out the nice people next door unless I really have to...)

Ooh, its like Western rural electrical and phone service. Unexpected party/transmission lines! Of course all the residents know these things, but the kids that get sent to exile/FNG service calls appear to think the entire universe was wired to 2K+era specs everywhere.

Oh, jeez! And yet another reason to be grateful I have no neighbors. ;)

True. Gloucestershire rural phones ditto.

Anyway. I think it's a bit more sorted. The nice people next door managed to find one of the spare keys and we discover that plumber-boy had pulled the bog to bits, but fitted an inline-tap-thing. Which appeared to be holding when I turned the water back on.

What a faff.

I do envy you Americans and your abundant land.

Are you in a terrace? We share an outside stopcock with the house next door too.

Yep. Nice and sensible people next door took the opportunity to un-share their supply when Bristol Water put new stop-cocks in a few years ago. I was probably looking the other way that week...

We don't even share a stopcock with our own house - we appear to have two quite independent supplies to front and back. I still have no idea where half the drains run under the bakery, or what the bone-dry drain cover in the back lawn was for.
